What it usually involves
The term covers many kinds of programme. Some are run by optometrists or orthoptists in a clinic, with exercises to do at home. The tasks usually aim to improve how the eyes team up, focus and move. Some programmes use computer games or headsets.
Because the name is so broad, the first step is to ask exactly what is being offered, who runs it and how progress will be measured.
How it differs from patching
Patching covers the stronger eye. It does not always bring vision to 20/20, and it does not teach the eyes to work together [5]. Vision therapy usually keeps both eyes open and tries to build teamwork. Dichoptic software, which shows a different image to each eye, is one type. Read more in our dichoptic therapy explainer.
What the main guidance says
We read the patient pages on lazy eye from the National Eye Institute, the NHS and the American Academy of Ophthalmology on 26 September 2026. They list glasses or contact lenses, patching, blurring drops and surgery for underlying causes. None of them lists vision therapy as a treatment [1][15][16]. That does not mean it has no value. It means it is not part of the standard advice on those pages.
What the research says
A 2020 systematic review looked at active vision therapy for anisometropic amblyopia in children and teenagers. Anisometropia means the two eyes differ a lot in focusing power. The search found 1,274 records, and only 8 studies met the review's criteria: 2 randomised trials and 6 non-randomised studies. The authors concluded that the evidence supports vision therapy as a promising option. They also found a high risk of bias in the non-randomised studies [22].
In plain terms, the results are encouraging but based on a small number of studies, and mostly not of the strongest design. The review covers one type of amblyopia in young people. It says little about adults or about other causes.
For digital dichoptic therapy, the evidence is mixed. A headset therapy beat glasses alone in children aged 4 to 7 and has FDA authorization [8][14]. But the largest trial of an iPad game did not show it was as good as patching [2]. Our research review has the details.
How to judge an offer of vision therapy
These are general questions, not medical advice:
- Who supervises the programme, and are they a qualified eye care professional?
- Is it in addition to the glasses and other treatment your eye doctor advised, or instead of them?
- How will progress be measured, for example by reading a letter chart with each eye, and how often?
- What evidence is there for your type of amblyopia and your age?
- How long will it take and what will it cost in total?
Be careful of anyone who promises to fix the problem for certain, or who tells you to stop glasses or patching without your eye doctor's advice.
About ZyncView
ZyncView is a separate product from anything described on this page. It is a set of free browser games and a reading exercise for vision training and eye coordination, played with red/blue glasses. It is a wellness and entertainment product. It is not a medical device, it is not a treatment for lazy eye or any other condition, and it has not been tested in a published trial. If you are worried about your vision or your child's, see an eye care professional first. You can try the games or read how dichoptic games work.
